The Beer Judge Certification Program list numerous styles under two categories
for Belgium beer. Belgium dubbel (18B) and Belgium Tripel (18C) are very common
styles in the US.
The Belgium dubbel (double) is a deep reddish, moderately strong, malty,
complex Belgian ale, that was originated at monasteries in the Middle Ages,
and was revived in the mid-1800s after the Napoleonic era. Belgium tripel
was originally developed at the Trappist monastery at Westmalle. Tripels are
spicy, fruity and alcohol flavors supported by a soft malt character. Tripels
are high in alcohol but does not taste strongly of alcohol. The best examples
are sneaky, not obvious. High carbonation helps to bring out the many flavors
and to increase the perception of a dry finish.
